For their eighth album, Let Love In, the Goo Goo Dolls returned to the place where it all started. Formed in 1986, the Buffalo-based scrappy punk trio was marked early on as followers of the Minneapolis punk-pop sound encapsulated by bands like the Replacements, Soul Asylum, and Husker Du. However, that all changed with the 1995 album A Boy Named Goo. A song from that record, “Name”, became the Goo Goo Dolls’ first real hit and propelled the disc to double platinum status. Most of the band’s rougher edges had been polished by then, and the Goos’ stellar ballad “Iris”, featured on the soundtrack of the 1998 soundtrack City of Angels, remained at the top spot on the Billboard charts for 18 weeks and earned three Grammy nominations. Dizzy Up the Girl, the record on which the ballad appeared, went triple platinum. “Here is Gone” was another hit, and helped the band’s 2002 album Gutterflower go gold.
By then the band was living in Los Angeles. But, unable to find inspiration in their surroundings, the Goo Goo Dolls returned to Buffalo, where they recorded Let Love In, their best, most confident album in years. Where many of their peers have been unable to capitalize on their early success, the Goo Goo Dolls have thrived, and in the process become one of the few acts today carrying the torch of alt-rock’s scrappy punk beginnings while staying in the game.
