Event Description

Join the Victoria Downtown Residents Association and local author Jaye C. Watts to celebrate the launch of his first book, The New Worlds, a dystopian science fiction novel. This FREE event will feature a reading from the book, along with a short interview and Q&A session with Jaye. There will also be a special, never-before-seen space-themed drag performance by Persi Flage, sci-fi trivia and prizes, snacks, and music by DJ n_dless.

About the book:

Set in the year 2293, the novel opens in the New Worlds Star System—a multi-planetary alliance bound not by a common worldview but by strict adherence to the system’s guiding principles: a ban on between-world contact and a firm belief in the “Truth of many truths.” Mediators like Axton Bryce are tasked with protecting the many truths by traveling from one world to another to observe, participate, and gather knowledge. But as they learn the ways of each world, they must also hunt for those who defy their world’s truth: the Outliers.

About the author:

Jaye C. Watts (he/they) is a queer and trans sci-fi writer living on Lək̓ wəŋən territory in Victoria. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, with a minor in Technology and Society, as well as a diploma in Professional Recording Arts from the Art Institute of Vancouver. He currently works for the Chair in Transgender Studies at the University of Victoria. When he’s not working or writing, you can find Jaye cycling around the city, or mixing classic cocktails in his Downtown apartment.

Accessibility details:

The book launch will take place at theDock, on the 3rd floor of 722 Cormorant Street. Access to the 3rd floor is by elevator and the theDock has even floor throughout and a wheelchair accessible washroom, which is also gender-inclusive. There is on-street parking available on Cormorant Street, directly in front of the building. Additional parking is available in the Centennial Square Parkade (645 Fisgard Street). We encourage those who are able to walk, cycle or take public transit to the event. The closest bus stops are on the west side of Douglas at Cormorant, on the east side of Douglas just south of Pandora, and on the north side of Pandora just west of Blanshard.
