Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering: Everyone—welcome Jam 6:45pm, Open Stage 7:30pm, Feature Performers JES Trio at 9:00pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the door

JES Trio is Jane Slemon, Ellen van der Hoeven, and Susan Larkin. Stoo Born of Music on Main says they are "three fine ladies who combine their vocal and instrumental prowess to create something which is indeed greater than the sum of its parts!” Susan's clean, pure fiddle sound is well known in the English Country Dance communities of Vancouver and Victoria, while her recorder adds an ancient sound to other songs. Jane is a singer/songwriter with a strong guitar style based in folk and swing. Her two albums, Breathing August and Feather and Stone," feature original material and speak of the small joys and quirks of living in family. Ellen is also a singer/songwriter and her mandolin, guitar, and penny whistle offer a delightful mix of eclectic folk styles. The songs on her CD The Family Dance explore emotion and meaning in the everyday. Playing in Victoria will be a rare treat for JES!
