Few artists in the last decade have garnered as much critical praise or fan support as Bright Eyes. The Nebraska outfit, led by boy genius Conor Oberst, has been hailed from its earliest records as a band with potential greatness. That’s a lot of weight to have to carry around, but Oberst’s commitment to his ideals and the craft of songwriting has meant that he has not disappointed in any regard. His most recent Bright Eyes records, the simultaneously released I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, brought his work to a wider audience and surprised even those fans with already high expectations. The records showed two signs of Oberst’s personality—the first is a country-tinged acoustic record and the second, a more band-centric effort, all imbued with indie-rock attitude and populist melodies.
A prolific artist, Oberst has also been producing, appearing on tribute records, recording EPs and touring, touring, touring. He played with REM and Bruce Springsteen on a tour of swing states in October of 2004, proving he could hold an arena of people spellbound with just his voice and guitar. His appearances with Bright Eyes, a collective that changes with every tour and record, have proven immensely popular, especially in Vancouver, where numerous appearances over the years have earned Bright Eyes a loyal and rabid following.
