The Viano Quartet
Event Description
The award-winning Viano Quartet returns to Victoria for their second concert of the season as guests at the School of Music, offering a vibrant and eclectic program that traverses centuries and continents. Hear Caroline Shaw’s “Valencia,” a piece inspired by the luminous energy and intricate structure of an orange, bursting with color and rhythmic vitality. Also on the program is Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 77, No. 2, one of his final quartets, brimming with playful counterpoint and masterful craftsmanship. A striking shift in perspective comes with Wu Man’s “Glimpses of Muqam Chebiyat,” drawing on the rich musical traditions of the Uyghur Muqam, blending Eastern and Western influences. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet in G Major, Op. 106, a work of sweeping lyricism and folk-inspired dance rhythms, composed upon his return to Bohemia after his years in America.
Join us for an unforgettable evening as the Viano Quartet weaves together past and present, tradition and innovation, in a program that celebrates the power of the string quartet.
Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet is one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and is currently in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have captivated audiences in nearly every major city across the globe.
