Event Description
Wednesday, June 22, 2005 – The Duncan Garage Showroom proudly presents international recording artist Rik Leaf live in concert.
Winnipeg’s Rik Leaf has gained national renown as a captivating performer and articulate songwriter since 1998. His combination of electro-acoustic-funk-folk-rock, spontaneous socio-political-psycho-spiritual performance rants, and touring with a collection of original artwork and print reproductions from some of Canada’s emerging visual artists, has been described as ‘the consummate art experience, absolutely worth checking out’ (Bill Bulham, Uptown Magazine)
Constantly touring North America and internationally to the U.K., Scandinavia and Kosovo, as well as being featured on six internationally released compilation CDs and two independent full-length CDs have attracted the attention and praise of Canada’s cultural industry, ‘Rik in performance is like a young Cockburn on caffeine.’ (Judy Slivniski, Producer, EDGE Cultural Management)
Rik’s career began in 1998 when he founded Tribe of One, a collective of visual artists, dancers, painters, writers and musicians committed to improving the world through their artistic work. Over the last seven years Rik has produced/participated in a variety of initiatives, including tours
to First Nation Reserves, high schools and universities across Canada, outdoor festivals, house concerts, a benefit tour for War Child Canada and an international benefit concert with the United Nations in Kosovo, with Bruce Cockburn. Rik was the featured musical guest for 24 episodes of ‘Free TV’, a nationally broadcast pop culture TV show in 2003.
Joining Rik for this cross Canada tour in June is Marie-Josée Dandeneau, an acclaimed Metis multi-instrumentalist from St. Boniface, MB, adding standup and fretless bass, piano, acoustic and djembe. Marie-Josée was awarded “Best Francophone Recording” at the 2001 Prairie Music Awards as well as “Best Technical Recording” from Mid Ocean School of Media Arts in 2002.
If you love music that is passionately written and performed, enjoy captivating live performers, wildly entertaining storytelling, spontaneous performance rants, and are interested in supporting Canada’s brightest emerging artists…don’t miss this concert!
